Billy Oskay and Micheal O Domhnaill - Nightnoise - 1984

Nightnoise comenzó como una colaboración entre el violinista estadounidense Billy Oskay y el guitarrista irlandés Mícheál Ó Domhnaill. Juntos lanzaron el álbum Nightnoise en 1984. Tres años después la hermana de Mícheál, pianista y vocalista, Tríona Ní Dhomnaill, quien había colaborado previamente con su hermano en Skara Brae, Relativity, y Bothy Band; y el flautista irlandés-estadounidense, Brian Dunning se unieron al dúo original. Nightnoise, la banda, había nacido.

Nightnoise - Something Of Time

Something of Time es el primer disco publicado por la banda irlandesa Nightnoise como cuarteto, integrado por el violinista estadounidense Billy Oskay y el guitarrista irlandes Mícheál Ó Domhnaill, a quienes se añadió posteriormente la hermana de Mícheál, Tríona Ní Dhomnaill, teclista y vocalista, y el flautista irlandes-estadounidense, Brian Dunning.

Este primer lanzamiento como cuarteto establece lo que sera el estilo de todas las subsecuentes grabaciones del cuarteto: ambientes bucólicos llenos de nostalgia y con un toque reflexivo y meditativo, materializado por una instrumentación de inspiración celta aunque con aproximaciones al jazz y a estilos ligeramente más modernos. El aire intemporal de la música y su carácter profundo y sereno ha dotado a esta banda de un lugar único en la historia de la música instrumental contemporánea.

Destaca el tema que abre la grabación, 'Timewinds' que se inicia con clave, sintetizadores y flautas, e introduce el tema o concepto principal de este disco, el paso del tiempo; también el tema que le sigue, 'Perchance to Dream', una colaboración entre Mícheál y Billy, y también 'Tundra Summer', un tema compuesto por Billy Oskay y fundamentado a partir del piano de Tríona.

Nightnoise - The Parting Tide

El sonido de Nightnoise fue cambiando sutilmente con el paso de los discos hasta que Billy Oskay decidió dejar paso en su instrumento, el violín, al hoy también desaparecido Johnny Cunningham. Oskay otorgó ese reflejo norteamericano tan necesario en "The parting tide", el trabajo más delicioso de una banda sencillamente irrepetible, un grupo que, desde la distancia, supo crear su propio sonido para el enriquecimiento de la cultura celta.

El grupo está formado por los hermanos Micheal O Domhnaill (guitarra, teclados y coros) y Triona Ni Dhomhnaill (teclados, acordeón y voz principal), el violinista y teclista Billy Oskay, y el flautista Brian Dunning.

Nightnoise - At the End of the Evening

Al Final de La Tarde (1988) fue el tercer álbum de Nightnoise, y el segundo como banda del guitarrista Mícheál Ó Domhnaill, el violinista Billy Oskay, la tecladista Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill y el flautista Brian Dunning. Ellos continúaron explorando el entonces nuevo género New Age, basándose en la música tradicional irlandesa y la música de cámara. Aunque su primera grabación juntos como cuarteto sonaba poco ensayada, aquí se las arreglan mejor para estar sincronizados a través de las muchas transiciones en sus suites instrumentales.

Este álbum trae un par de cosas nuevas para Nightnoise. Se trata de canciones reales: hasta entonces, el proyecto había sido puramente instrumental, y es sobre todo también aquí, donde Triona canta con un vibrato tan fuerte que es difícil distinguir las palabras. Además, en algunos temas Triona toca un sintetizador en vez de piano acústico o clavecín.

Nightnoise - Shadow of Time

Cuando sus fans querían más, Windham Hill lanzó A Winter's Solstice III , el tercero de la serie con música tradicional y de Navidad. Los artistas incluyen a Schonherz y Scott, Modern Mandolin Quartet, Liz Story, Nightnoise y muchos más.

Winter's Solstice III es interesante porque es el primer álbum de la serie que incluye letras, en este caso de John Gorka, Barbara Higbie y Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill (Nightnoise).

Este álbum cuenta con pistas completamente originales grabadas específicamente para el álbum. Dawn Atkinson toma el control creativo para la grabacion, con contribuciones significativas de los ejecutivos de Windham Hill Cookie Marenco y Will Ackerman.
