Holy shit, I forgot how great this record is! Epic, Italian symphonic black/gothic metal -- melodic, tremolo-picked riffs, high-pitched howls, and layer upon layer of REAL, not keyboard-made, orchestral elements. Plus, the bonus track is a Type O Negative cover! (I realize that most of you metal snobs don't like that band, but I fucking love 'em.) If you like frilly metal, this record is tops.

Fanga - Afrokaliptyk - 2004

 


Extraordinario combo afrobeat procedente de Motpellier, Francia, Fanga ejecuta pura y espiritosa música africana nacida del árbol de Fela Kuti y Tony Allen. En el dialecto Dioula originario del oeste del continente negro, Fanga significa "fuerza espiritual", y la hipnótica fusión de funk y folclore tradicional africano que ejercen estos 8 músicos es exactamente eso: afrobeat enfocado a una nueva generación y que se ayuda de dosificada electrónica. Teloneros de Antibalas, Meï Teï Shô, Seun Kuti, Guem y otras grandes figuras del género, Fanga añade la fructífera colaboración de excepcionales artistas como son Tony Allen, Segun Damisa (ex-músico de Fela y Femi Kuti) a las voces y percusión, y la cantante Kaddy Diara, poderosa estrella emergente de Burkina Faso.

Dezarie - Ease The Pain - 2009 - Virgin Islands - USA



Roots empress Dezarie has blessed the reggae community with the deliverance of her newest recording "Gracious Mama Africa". Released on the Afrikan Roots Lab record label, this album emerges from the seeds planted on her amazing debut album of 2001 "FYA".
Gracious Mama Africa transports the incredible voice of Dezarie to a whole new level - the highest heights. Her foundation is firmly established in songs such as "Travelers" and the title track. The brilliance and clarity of Dezarie's voice is reverently unveiled on "Exhalt". Gracious Mama Africa abounds with pleas for social justice and racial equality with selections like "Poverty", "Strengthen Your Mind" and "Justice".

But to this listener, the strength and power of Dezarie is most strikingly displayed in her condemnation of so-called civilization. "Gone Down", "Not One Penny", "Law Fe De Outlaw", "Slew Dem An Done" and "Judgment Come" all deliver conscious punches that penetrate the soul.
"Do what you want, wheresoever you please. Bombing Vieques, yes your bombing the seas. Lock up anyone that was opposing. Speaking against the nonsense that you were doing. But babylon you gone down, you gone down. Babylon funeral, you gone down." 
After receiving Atlanta's "Best New Female Reggae Artist" award in 2001, Dezarie returned to her native island of St. Croix. Since that time, she has been working closely with Midnite, the players of instruments for "Gracious Mama Africa". Midnite's trademark sound is fully displayed on this album. Momentous bass lines from Phillip Merchant, classic one-drop from Dion Hopkins and the bubbling of Ron Benjamin on keyboards prevail throughout, accentuated by Abijah's charismatic guitar playing.

From the excellent overdubs of Dezarie's voice to the flying symbols on "Slew Dem" it is evident that Ron Benjamin worked tirelessly in the production and mixing of this album. The fruits of this labour are eloquently displayed on Gracious Mama Africa which is sure to be one of the best roots albums of 2003.

Después de cosechar innumerables éxitos con el trabajo Sultan´s Secret Door (1997), el extraordinario percursionista turco Burhan Öçal, junto con Istanbul Oriental Ensemble, editan este maravilloso trabajo donde recrean el viaje de una caravana por Turquía, mezclando ritmos clásicos otomanos con el clarinete, propio de los zíngaros de esa tierra.

Asa - Asha - 2007


Asha es el encantador disco debut de Asa (Bukola Elemide), cantante nigeriana que vive a caballo entre París y Lagos, digna heredera de la música afro-folk. El pulso de África se refleja en el ritmo de sus canciones, un disco lleno de soul, r&b, pop y funk cantado en inglés y yoruba.

La historia de Asa (que se pronuncia Asha) comienza en Lagos, Nigeria, una ciudad repleta de gente en las calles y con una energía arrolladora pero, a su vez, cargada de profundas raíces espirituales. Tribus islámicas mezcladas con la fe cristiana en un clima de tolerancia, la juventud imitando los patrones americanos y la turbulenta ciudad sumergiéndose sin descanso en un infernal pero, a la vez, armónico ballet de amor y odio, relax y violencia, pobreza y prosperidad. Como ella misma señala, "Lagos es el Nueva York de Nigeria. Si quieres llegar a algún sitio musicalmente, es el lugar donde hay que estar en Nigeria. Se encuentran las mejores oportunidades pero también las mayores decepciones". En el hogar paterno, Asa se encuentra con una extensa y ecléctica colección de clásicos del soul y de música tradicional de Nigeria. Así que Asa crece empapándose e inspirándose en los sonidos y mensajes de artistas como Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Bob Marley y los nigerianos Fela Kuti, Sunny Ade y Ebenezer Obey, que le sirven como piedra angular cuando más tarde comenzó a escribir sus propias canciones.

Es en su época de estudiante en París cuando realmente configura su estilo musical, sumergiéndose en las canciones de sus contemporáneas/os musicales -Erika Badu, D'Angelo, Raphael Saadiq, Lauryn Hill y Angélique Kidjo-. En 2004 conoció a su mánager, Janet, quien le presentó a Cobhams Emmanuel Asuquo, que acabó convirtiéndose en su compañero musical, y durante un tiempo toca con artistas como Nubians, Manu Dibango, Doctor L y Tony Allen. Posteriormente, Asa firma un contrato con el sello Naïve. En compañía de Cobhams, y con el nuevo apoyo de Christophe Dupouy, produce un magnífico disco de título homónimo.

En Asha, su disco debut (2007), Asa fusiona pop, r&b, world music, funk, soul y reggae en un álbum en el que canta en inglés y yoruba. Con una percusión impecable, un órgano Hammond y un bajo reggae, el álbum cuenta con dos pistas promocionales: "Jailer", una canción acerca de "la ironía de la opresión, la que opera en la vida cotidiana" y "Fire On The Mountain". Inspirada por su herencia musical, sus letras hablan de su país, de las cuestiones rutinarias de la vida y de su propia vida con sutil ironía. "Quiero que mi música conmueva a la gente. Como africana, quiero dar esperanza a mi gente, pero también gritar en su nombre. Quiero mostrar al mundo que algo bonito y positivo puede surgir del continente negro e inspirar a la gente joven en todo el mundo".
