Tinariwen - Tassili - 2011
El mítico grupo Tinariwen vuelve a la escena musical de sus orígenes, el desierto, con Tassili, un álbum que recoge el sonido africano en primera persona, bajo las influencias del blues y el folk norteamericano, mostrando las raíces musicales del África Occidental. La humildad, el respeto, la tranquilidad del desierto, la calma espiritual se entrelazan en uno de los mejores trabajos de 2011, ganador del Grammy 2012 "Best World Music Album".
Tinariwen surgió en 1982, con las rebeliones tuaregs de finales de los 70 que luchaban por mayores derechos y reconocimiento frente al ejercito maliense. El grupo forjó su hipnótico estilo en el exilio argelino y libio entre la música tradicional, el pop norteafricano (chaabi, raï) y distintas variantes del rock occidental, inventando matices nuevos para la guitarra eléctrica.
Firmada la paz entre su pueblo y el gobierno de Mali, Tinariwen se convirtieron en embajadores musicales de la cultura tuareg, debutando en la grabación en los primeros años 90 con su The Radio Tisdas Sessions, saltando a la escena internacional, que comienza a apreciar en lo que vale el assouf, ese estilo tan peculiar que aúna blues, rock, reggae y la música folk de los hombres azules del desierto. Su música trataba temas como despertar político, problemas de exilio, represión de su pueblo, y soberanía.
La publicación posterior de álbumes como Amassakoul (2004), Aman Iman (2007) e Imidiwan (2009) acrecentaron su fama y hoy los miembros de Tinariwen son aclamados por sus riffs de guitarra y reciben elogios de gente como U2, Brian Eno o Tom Waits.
Ahora, con su último álbum, Tassili (2011), Tinariwen vuelve a sus orígenes con canciones que transmiten fuertes dosis emocionales en una dimensión más cercana al folk que al blues-rock que los ha hecho célebres. Grabado en el desierto de Tassili N'Ajjer (Argelia) durante tres semanas de invierno, el álbum representa un legado cultural inigualable. Para ello, han invitado al guitarrista Nels Cline (de Wilco), y al multinstrumentista Kyp Malone y a Tunde Adebimpe, del grupo indie-rock TV On The Radio, que inyectan soul a "Tenere Taquim Tossam" y sutiles armonías vocales que se deslizan en varias canciones. Por su parte, Nels Cline da un tono "frippertrónico" a "Imidiwan Win Sahara". Cuentan, también, con la colaboración de The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, que contribuyen con sus metales a hermanar la desértica desolación de "Ya Messinagh" con el espíritu jazz de la mítica Nueva Orleans.
Alguno de los mejores momentos del disco surgen cuando Tinariwen vuelve a sus típicos cantos tuaregs ribeteados por acordes que parecen inspirados por el blues, como es el caso de "Tilliaden Osamnat". Y para nada son desdeñables los momentos finales, cuando su líder Ibrahim Ag Alhabib se convierte en espartano "folksinger" en "Iswegh Attay", ayudado por Kyp Malone, mientras que Abdallah Ag Alhousseyni hace lo propio en en "Takest Tamidaret", temas a los que solo les falta que se escuche el crepitar del fuego bajo el cielo estrellado.

Soul Classics - 28 Greatest Soul Hits - 1991
Desde hace veinte años, el soul ha ido cobrando cada vez más fuerza en todo el mundo. Lo que comenzó denominándose "música racial" en tono peyorativo, ha traspasado fronteras y entre ellas la racial. Muchos de los nuevos grupos o solistas blancos no sólo lo practican sino que reconocen al rhythm and blues como única fuente de inspiración.
Todas y todos conocemos a los grandes: Otis Redding, The Supremes, Sam Cooke, The Temptations... pero éste es un género que se nutre, en gran medida, de voces casi anónimas. Canciones que pasaron casi desapercibidas para el gran público y que con los años -y en nuevas versiones, casi siempre de artistas blancos- obtuvieron el éxito internacional.
Soul Classics es precisamente eso. Una recopilación de 28 grandes clásicos del soul (ripeados de la edición original, por Dro en 1991, en LPs). Auténticas joyas que triunfaron hace más de cuarenta años y que, además, continuamente se incorporan al repertorio actual de nuestra música. Quien habló de la "fuente inagotable de recursos" estaba pensando en la música soul.

Peter Buffett - Lost Frontier - 1991
Narada, compañía que le publicó sus primeros discos, "The waiting", "One by one", "Yonnondio" y esta maravilla titulada "Lost frontier". Y es en esa 'frontera perdida' entre la música interior y la comercialidad donde se ubica este disco, publicado en 1991 por la compañía de Milwaukee, en el que Buffett explora intensamente un mundo electrónico que en años posteriores, sobre todo tras su contacto con la cultura de los indios nativos americanos, dejará paso a su interacción con la acústica (lo que en realidad ya se empieza a notar aquí). Esto no resta calor ni intensidad a este trabajo, que consigue momentos realmente emocionantes, con el punto culminante de la inmensa pieza que le da título.

Fãs da Maria Bethânia vão curtir a postagem deste CD independente, enviado pelo amigo Roberto de Brito, brasileiro que mora em Hamburgo, na Alemanha, a quem agradeço pela colaboração. O álbum “Orações na voz de Maria Bethânia” foi lançado em 2006, com tiragem limitada, no formato envelope, e não entrou no circuito comercial. Trata-se de um trabalho beneficente da intérprete, cuja renda foi revertida para obras de restauração da Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Purificação, em Santo Amaro, terra natal da cantora, na Bahia. O disco, com nove faixas, é de sensibilidade ímpar, pra se ouvir em silêncio e curtir essa voz abençoada. Confira:

Malena Muyala - Temas Pendientes - 1998 - Viajera - 2007
Malena Muyala (23 de marzo de 1971, San José de Mayo) cantante y compositora uruguaya de tango, valses, milongas y milongones. Una de las principales voces femeninas de Uruguay.
Muyala nace en Uruguay en Departamento de San José donde transcurre su infancia y parte de su juventud. El ámbito familiar, especialmente su abuela, siempre fomentaron el gusto por la música y el teatro.
En el año 1997 presenta ante el Ministerio de Educación y Cultura de Uruguay su proyecto "Malena, tanto tango y tanto amor" que es seleccionado entre 70 propuestas para realizar una gira a nivel nacional. Un año después graba su primer disco compacto dando inicio a su carrera discográfica. Desde ese año hasta la actualidad se ha dedicado de forma continua y constante a su carrera artística que la ha llevado a realizar diversas presentaciones nacionales e internacionales, siendo reconocida por diversas distinciones y convirtiéndose en una artista multipremiada.
En el año 2000 graba su segundo Disco "Puro Verso". Seguido por "Viajera" en el 2007, el cual obtiene el reconocimiento de Disco de Oro

L'avventura - Mystery Mix
You never know when inspiration will strike next. It could happen while pondering the meaning of life while toiling away at your office job. It could happen when you are going for a brisk walk in the middle of a downpour. It could happen as you let your mind aimlessly wander while on a slow drive, or bus ride home after a long day at work. It could simply occur when having a conversation with a loved one who ignites a spark within your creative soul.
A young man and woman meet on a scenic train ride through the countryside. As idle conversation goes on, the man asks the woman, "Which came first for you? Music or love?" She responds "Music, of course. A fiancee you've gotta look for, but a radio can be bought". The man goes on to say that it was "love" for him, and that he knows a great deal about the ways of the heart.
With so many distractions as of late, I needed something to get me back on track, and while taking the early hours of the day to watch the exquisite, cinematic and tragically beautiful Michelangelo Antonioni film from 1960 entitled "Laaventura" I discovered the aforementioned conversation between these two strangers on a train. What came first for me, besides the unconditional love from my parents and siblings, was "the love of music". Ever since I was a child, I had such a profound appreciation for music that, according to my parents, I even said "No, da, da, da" to my grandmother when she forgot the words to "Rockabye Baby" while trying to rock me to sleep. Even though I haven't mastered a musical instrument up to this point in my life, it's clear to me that I have musical notes coursing through my veins, and a vast catalog of melodies and rhythms stored in my cerebral cortex to be called upon at a moment's notice.
Awhile ago on Eclectic Grooves, I had a series called "Plain Brown Wrappers" which featured cryptic reviews of obscure records without revealing the name of the artist or album. The idea was to have the visitors try to guess who the artist was, and get everyone engaged in an ongoing conversation about rare artists and albums that they have discovered throughout their lives. It was one of the most popular series since the inception of the blog that unfortunately fizzled due to a lack of visitor participation. My latest idea for a mystery mix series came from scouring the Waxidermy message board, and noticing that there were more comments and participation from people when they didn't know the name of the songs on the mix. It was the not knowing that made people more curious about the songs contained in the mix.
Today is my first foray into the land of the mystery mix, and with that I'll leave you with one last note. L'aaventura is an Italian term that has a double meaning of "fling" and "adventure". Please join me on this musical adventure, or fling, if you will.

Kiyoshi Yoshida - Long Journey To Japan (Nihonjin Harukanatabi)
Kiyoshi Yoshida crea esta estupenda Banda sonora para el documental Long Journey to Japan de la television japonesa NHK.
Kiyoshi a los sintetizadores y programacion le acompañan, Jia Peng Fang tocando el Erhu, los Yoshida Brothers al Samisen, Masaji Watanabe al piano, Rui Komiya al Koto, Hideyo Takakuwa al Shakuhachi, y a las cuerdas el Rongtian Benjamin Group.
Kiyoshi Yoshida majored in contemporary arrangement and film scoring at the Berklee College of Music. Upon his return to Japan in 1987, he became involved in composing various types of music, including sound tracks and commercial scores as a synthesizer operator and producer. In 1999, he released "ASIAN DRUMS" in sixteen countries including Japan. It won him high acclaim, particularly in the U.S. "ASIAN DRUMS II" came next and was followed by "UBUD" and "UBUD DUA" which he produced with his own band. He has composed sound tracks for NHK TV programs such as "Nihonjin Harukana Tabi" (Japanese on Distant Travels), "Ningen Dokyumento (Human Document)" and "Toukuni Arite Nipponjin" (Japanese in Distant Lands). In 2005 at the Aichi Expo, he directed the music for Kansai Yamamoto's opening act "TOBUZO" (Let's Fly! Festival of Life) In 2006, he was in charge of the music for the film, "Toki o Kakeru Shojo" (The girl who leapt through time) released in the summer of 2006. In 2007, he worked as the music director for the Kansai Yamamoto's KANSAI SUPER SHOW "TAIYO NO FUNE" (The Sun Ship)

Kiyoshi Yoshida majored in contemporary arrangement and film scoring at the Berklee College of Music. Upon his return to Japan in 1987, he became involved in composing various types of music, including sound tracks and commercial scores as a synthesizer operator and producer. In 1999, he released "ASIAN DRUMS" in sixteen countries including Japan. It won him high acclaim, particularly in the U.S. "ASIAN DRUMS II" came next and was followed by "UBUD" and "UBUD DUA" which he produced with his own band. He has composed sound tracks for NHK TV programs such as "Nihonjin Harukana Tabi" (Japanese on Distant Travels), "Ningen Dokyumento (Human Document)" and "Toukuni Arite Nipponjin" (Japanese in Distant Lands). In 2005 at the Aichi Expo, he directed the music for Kansai Yamamoto's opening act "TOBUZO" (Let's Fly! Festival of Life) In 2006, he was in charge of the music for the film, "Toki o Kakeru Shojo" (The girl who leapt through time) released in the summer of 2006. In 2007, he worked as the music director for the Kansai Yamamoto's KANSAI SUPER SHOW "TAIYO NO FUNE" (The Sun Ship)
